How did JoeyFest begin?

In the fall of 2016, we lost Joey Towers of West Newbury to suicide. For many, this tragedy led to a heightened awareness of our current mental health crisis as well as an impetus to take action on behalf of the loved ones we have lost. Joey’s untimely passing and the powerful outpouring of love that followed it introduced us to a community devoted to the widespread and urgent crisis in mental health that touches all of us, and the power of bringing this community together.

The inaugural JoeyFest occurred in 2019 and was born out of a desire to bring conversations about mental health and suicide awareness to a broader audience, raise money for large-scale efforts being made by Movember in suicide prevention initiatives and mental health awareness programs, and honor and celebrate Joey's life. The event continues to be inspired by his passions for music, being in the outdoors, and rich relationships while creating a space for open conversations about mental health. It has been humbling to see the outpouring of love and support for this event over the past five years, and we look forward to seeing the JoeyFest community continue to grow and connect for many years to come.

Can anyone attend the event? Do I need to RSVP?

The event is open to all ages, and families with children are more than welcome. No need to RSVP—just bring yourself (and all your friends!) on October 5th.

What should I expect at the event?

In addition to welcome speeches, live music, and food options, there will be tables set up with a raffle, JoeyFest merch for sale, handouts and information to learn more about mental health and suicide prevention, and a new addition for our fifth year of JoeyFest: an opportunity to read and view writing and art pieces created by community members about their own relationship with mental health. Interested in sharing a piece of your own? Reach out to us using the "Contact" page.

There will be tables, chairs, and bathrooms provided, but we encourage you to bring a favorite picnic blanket or lawn chair if you have one!

How much of my donation directly supports the cause?

100% of merch sales, raffle ticket purchases, and donations before, during, or after the event go directly to Movember. The food and beer trucks will also be donating a portion of their proceeds to the cause.

Do donations need to be in cash?

We accept donations via cash, check, and venmo, as well as credit card purchases made directly on the event site.

Can I volunteer or support the event?

Absolutely! Reach out to use using the form in the "Contact" page if you are interested in volunteering, donating a raffle item, or learning how else you can support!

Will the event still take place if it is raining?

Absolutely! In the case of rain, the event will be taking place inside. In the case of good weather, the event will take place outdoors and attendees will have access to indoor bathroom facilities. Either way, we look forward to seeing you there!
